Who Ogún Balenyó is
Ogún Balenyó is the Dominican expression of Ogún, the Yoruba orisha of iron, metal, and war, carried into the Dominican tradition through the same African spiritual heritage that shaped Santería and Haitian Vodou. In the Catholic layer of the 21 Divisiones, he is syncretized with Santiago Apóstol — Saint James the Greater — specifically in his form as Santiago Matamoros, the warrior saint depicted on horseback. His feast day is observed on July 25th.
